Spacey Awards Honour 2 Legends

These are the talented people who make living in space seem probable rather than impossible. Along the way their imagination transforms the celebrities who act in their films unrecognizable, often grotesque and dripping with personality. They work behind the scenes to bring magic to the silver screen.

At the 2006 Spacey Awards for the best in sci-fi and fantasy film and television taking place in Vancouver on May 27, the king of B-movies, Roger Corman is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award while Academy Award-winner Stan Winston, a master of modern movie effects, is being given the Special Achievement Award.

Corman, 80, has made a career out of low-budget movies and yet is acknowledged as one of the most influential men in American film. During a Hollywood career spanning more than 50 years, he's helped to launch the careers of many directors like James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, and Robert DeNiro.

Corman has produced more than 350 titles, including such niche hits as Death Race 2000, Battle Beyond the Stars, and Little Shop of Horrors. He's directed movies based on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, many starring the incomparable Vincent Price, including The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of Red Death and The Fall of the House of Usher. His films are uniquely violent and blended with kitschy humour.

Winston, 60, has been creating world famous characters for more than 30 years and is a leading figure in modern movie effects. He is the recipient of the Spacey Special Achievement Award. Winston describes himself more as a character designer than a makeup effects technician and says, "I don't do special effects. I do characters." Winston has been acknowledged by the Academy for his work in such films as Jurassic Park and Terminator 2: Judgment Day

When the Academy first created an Oscar category for achievement in makeup, Winston immediately earned a nomination for his work in the film Heartbeeps. He's collaborated with James Cameron on the monster effects of Aliens, designed the alien hunter in Predator, created the Penguin makeup Danny DeVito wore in Batman Returns, and along with Tim Burton, created Johnny Depp's lance-like fingers in Edward Scissorhands.

The awards are presented by the specialty channel, SPACE, and winners will be announced in a primetime special on May 27.
